Miss Steps

DAILY SNACK

Irene will take a step or two now
Before careening into the outstretched arms of a loving relative.
Or into a piece of furniture.
She is not walking yet,
But will be soon.
Her first step, though,
Her very first step
I have already forgotten.
I simply can’t remember when or where it was.
I will just have to say that she took her first steps around 11 months of age
Just like Colum took his at 10 months,
And hope I can at least muster up a blurry recollection of some of those early steps.
Oh wait. Video technology.
I’ll get on that.

Global Breastfeeding Challenge is ON!

I like to breastfeed and I like a good challenge. And I really, really like to win. So when I heard about the Global Breastfeeding Challenge taking place next Saturday I was all tell me more.

It turns out that a British Columbia-based non profit called the Quintessence Foundation has been organizing this breastfeeding awareness celebration since 2001. This year there are 234 sites registered to participate worldwide including Toronto.

Toronto Public Health and the Chinese/Vietnamese Breastfeeding Network have  joined forces to organize door prizes, information sessions, lunch and more.

How do you participate? Just go to the Rosedale School of Arts at 711 Bloor Street East (Castle Frank Subway) next Saturday, October 3, 2009. The challenge takes place between 10:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m but you need to show up early to register between 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.

Why bother? It’s a fun way to celebrate breastfeeding and to connect with breastfeeding women around the globe, for one. More importantly, though, it’s a chance to be on a winning team. Toronto came in sixth place last year with 199 women feeding 200 babies, but I think we can do better than that! And did I mention the free lunch? And door prizes?

I plan on going and would love some company. If you are interested in joining me please let me know so we can meet up. Or just look for me there.

Of course, you can find out where your closest site is no matter where you live. This is not a Toronto-only event. But if too many of you do that Toronto might not win and I really, really want to win. So maybe spread out, k?

Fall Veg Fallout

I lost a squash out of the stroller basket yesterday,

And decided to retrace our steps for a couple blocks,

To see if we could find it.

Colum and I stopped in at the bakery we had just been to,

And asked the woman behind the counter if she found a squash rolling around.

No squash.

Colum then wanted look in a small pharmacy,

Even though we hadn’t been there at all.

I called to him from the sidewalk,

And then followed him into the store.

A woman was saying to him,

“First of all, I don’t even work here.”

Then she looked up at me and continued,

“And he’s in the wrong store — he’s looking for a squash.”

It was all I could do to keep from laughing.

Lady, you do realize that he’s three, right?

Proud Baby Alert

Irene’s new favourite place to be,

Is up the one step to the back deck,

Clinging to the open screen door.

She is so proud.

Can you tell?

DAILY SNACK

Let’s see now.

Need to wash much vomit off car seat cover.

And the tag reads . . .

Hand Wash Only

Line Dry

Check watch.

Yeah, I think I’m going to take my chances,

And use these here machines instead.

Redesign. Pow!

It’s been nearly two years since I started this blog and it’s about time for a change, don’t you think? I reluctantly said good-bye to my old Digg-3 WordPress theme (heavily customized) this weekend and am putting the finishing touches on my new Panorama theme.

It’s clean, it’s fresh, it’s new. I like it a lot. I hope you do too.

Dessert For Dinner

DAILY SNACK

You are not going to find a lot of craft ideas,

Or fancy recipes on my blog.

But some things cannot be overlooked.

Cousin Liam’s 5th birthday cupcakes in all their glory:

Yup.

Cupcake bun, brownie patty and sugar cookie fries.

They still make me smile.

Another Housekeeping Fail

DAILY SNACK

The weather is starting to turn.

The night air is carrying a bit of a chill,

And baby footsies need to be covered.

Thus we discovered the distinct lack of suitable pajamas in Irene’s drawer.

Not to worry, I thought,

I’ll just pull down the next size of Colum’s old baby clothes.

So if Irene’s nearly 11 months old,

Then I’ll need 12 – 18 month pj’s.

Hmmm.  Could it be? Could it possibly be?

That huge pile of too-small clothes yet to be put away on Colum’s dresser?

The two boxes overflowing with size 2 clothes …

And 18-month-sized stuff?!?

I guess a year and a half wasn’t enough time to find another box,

And make my way to the closet.

For shame.

Kiddie Paranoia

DAILY SNACK

I was away from my  children for a whopping 30hrs last weekend,

And they’ve got a whole new set of issues.

Irene is terrified of her crib,

(Which might be par for the course at her age,)

And Colum …

Well, he was pretty adament yesterday that,

“All of the buildings are getting torn down, Mommy.”

“Really, Colum,” I answered,

“Did you see a building being torn down?”

“No, Mommy. All of the buildings are being torn down.

This building and that building and that one.

A mad guy is tearing them all down.”

Of course.

Stupid Good Night’s Sleep

DAILY SNACK

I slept last night, I really splept.

But that wasn’t the plan.

Irene had been sound asleep since just after 8pm,

But Colum’s bath seemed to have a re-energizing effect.

Finally, at 9:30pm I ushered him to his bed and asked that he be extra careful not to wake his sister.

I agreed to bring him a sip of milk,

And when I got back he had pulled a chair over to the light switch and turned it on.

Irene woke up with a vengeance and would not return to her crib.

Finally I had to crawl in beside her and nurse her and wait for her to fall off.

This baby who has been falling asleep in her own crib since she was a newborn,

This baby who I have never nursed down or rocked to sleep,

Did not want to be left alone.

By the time I crawled out of her crib at 10:30pm,

I had been lulled into a such a sleepy state that I lay down on my own bed “for just a minute,”

Leaving the miles-long list of things I was supposed to do undone.

I am so screwed.
